8 Checks Before Sharing Health Data With an App in the UK

Before giving an app health data, check who receives it, why they need it and what happens if you stop using the service. A useful feature does not automatically justify access to your full medical history. I would decide which specific task the app should perform, then share the minimum information needed. Privacy and clinical usefulness are separate questions; assess both before connecting records or uploading documents.

1. Identify who controls your health data

Find the legal organisation behind the app, not only its product name. Check contact details, the privacy team and whether the service is provided by an NHS organisation, a private company or a partnership. A familiar logo does not explain every organisation involved.

Follow links from the provider’s official information rather than assuming a mention on Manchester Chronicle verifies ownership. If the operator and contact route remain unclear, pause before uploading anything sensitive.

2. Read the privacy notice before registration

The notice should explain what is collected, why, how long it is kept and who receives it. Look for a version applying to the actual app, not only the company’s marketing website. Read the sections on advertising, analytics, research and product development.

Health information receives extra protection under UK data protection law as special category data. Organisations need an appropriate legal basis and additional condition for processing it. Do not assume consent is always the legal basis, or that clicking one button explains every proposed use.

3. Compare permissions with the task

Ask why a symptom diary needs contacts, precise location, microphone access or an entire photo library. Some permissions may be needed for a particular feature, but the app should explain their purpose. See whether optional access can be refused while retaining the service you want.

A prescription-charge article on Glasgow Bulletin can be read without giving its publisher your medication history. Apply the same distinction within an app: reading general information and receiving a personalised clinical service may require very different amounts of data.

4. Check sharing, tracking and international transfers

Look beyond statements such as “we never sell your data”. Information can still be shared with service providers or used for other stated purposes. Check the recipients or recipient categories and any explanation of transfers outside the UK.

Ask whether information described as anonymous is genuinely separated from identifiers, and whether linked datasets could change that picture. A promise of anonymisation should not be treated as a reason to ignore what is collected or how it is used.

5. Review security and connected accounts

Use a unique password and additional authentication where offered. Check what connecting a GP record, wearable or cloud account allows the app to read and whether access continues in the background. Only connect a source when the benefit justifies the extra information exposed.

Keep devices updated and protect the screen lock. No provider can honestly promise zero security risk. Ask how to report a suspected breach and how the company communicates important security problems.

6. Understand retention, export and deletion

Check whether you can download information in a usable format and what happens when your account closes. Deleting the app from a phone is not necessarily the same as deleting the account or information stored on company systems.

You can request erasure, but legal exceptions can permit retention. Ask what remains, why and for how long. Store your privacy correspondence separately from general bookmarks such as Local PR Services UK, so the operator’s actual commitments are easy to retrieve.

7. Consider children, shared devices and notifications

Check age requirements and any parental arrangements. Preview notifications carefully: a lock-screen message can reveal sensitive information to someone nearby. Consider who can access shared tablets, linked email accounts or exported reports, including family members and carers.

Save a dated copy of the privacy terms before agreeing, especially where information sharing is optional.

8. Decide how to leave or raise a concern

Find the privacy complaint route and account-disconnection controls before relying on the app. Raise concerns with the operator first; unresolved data-protection issues can go to the ICO. Share only when the purpose, choices and exit route are understandable.

This article provides general privacy information, not individual legal or security advice; check the app’s current terms and your circumstances.
